Description
The Mirror Book is a book containing drawings and text that gives new knowledge about pain physiology and psychology - and why physical activity is good pain management.
After reading the text and viewing the pictures in the book, the purpose of The Mirror Book is for you to reflect or ”mirror” your understanding, your thoughts and your feelings about pain. The Mirror Book will give you, among many other things, greater understanding of various psychological and physiological reactions to pain and stress, and why physical activity is a very good pain management strategy. Increased knowledge about pain in itself, can be very helpful in reducing pain.
The Mirror Book will give you the knowledge that;
- Your brain interprets physical pain and psychological or mental stress in much the same areas.
- Various normal psychological reactions to pain may increase or decrease your aches and pains.
- Pain = stress.
- Long-term pain or pain over time affects your hormonal system negatively and can lead to hypersensitivity in your central nervous system (sensitization).
- You do not have pain receptors, but rather ”nociceptors” (receptors for pressure, temperature changes and chemical reactions).
- Physical Activity = positive stress.
- You have a chemist in your brain that you have to open to get control of aches and pains.
- Regular physical activity is important for your hormonal systems to function normally, which also leads to less pain.
The fact is, various psychological reactions such as our thoughts and beliefs result in physiological responses that may enhance or reduce our experience of pain and suffering. One of the aims of The Mirror Book is to get you to reflect on the content based on the text and images. To help you with this, there are a number of questions for each image. These images will make you think, reflect and open up a dialogue with yourself about your experiences, thoughts and perceptions of pain and suffering. This dialogue will assist in the beginning of a conscious process that will change your understanding of pain and suffering and will give you new and better ways to relate and cope with your problem.
In your process of reflection over your experiences and thoughts about pain and how it affects you, you may also wish to involve other people whom you are close to and who you feel is a good listener. These people are then encouraged to explain back to you what you have told them and in this way, the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of pain/suffering and its varied aspects will open up. A clearer picture will begin to evolve of how you can deal with your problems and create opportunities for yourself to live a better life.
Another priority of The Mirror Book is to give you an understanding that physical activity and training is probably the best strategy we know of in the treatment of pain. In the book you will find both physiological and psychological explanations for why this is. Additionally, you will find clear and concise instructions as to how you can begin to activate the pain inhibitory processes found in your body.
Another important aim of The Mirror Book is to increase your understanding that regular physical activity PREVENTS the central nervous system becoming hypersensitive (sensitized). Regular physical activity decreases the sensitivity (sensitization) of those who suffer from long-term pain and stress. Despite the recent years of major advances in medical science, the fight against aches and pains, stress and illness continues. The boundaries between our thoughts, our minds, our bodies and our souls is not absolute. What we do and what we think affects the entire body. The Mirror Book shows you how this is possible. If you think it seems difficult, read on and follow the instructions. You will be surprised!
